Welcome to River Class
River Class is a year 2 class taught by Miss Falkner and Mrs Howe and supported by Mrs Taylor.
In River Class we enjoy learning about the world and community we live in.
We take pride in our learning and are always curious to know more. We love to develop our teamwork skills and enjoy supporting each other in our learning. We like to take part in practical activities to develop our skills and knowledge.
Our School Day
Everyday your child will need:
Reading record and book
Book bag
Coat
Water bottle
Packed lunch (unless you have selected school dinners)
PE kits must be kept in school. Our PE lessons are on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Supporting Learning at Home
Our expectation is that TTrockstars/numbots and reading are done every day and therefore additional homework is optional. Homework books are provided should children wish to extend their learning at home. Ideas for extending learning can be found on our half-termly overview.
If you would like to support your child with their learning at home, here are some activities that can be completed across the key areas of Reading and Maths:
Reading
Children should read at home every day for at least 10 minutes.
The reading should be recorded in their reading record and brought into school every day. Children who are still on the RWI phonics programme will receive a new book every 5 days; it is important to read these books more than once to help develop fluency and comprehension.
Children who have exited the RWI phonics programme will be assessed and provided with a reading level. They can then select Accelerated Reader books within this level from the school library. These books can be quizzed on Accelerated Reader. Accelerated Reader allows children to explore their comprehension and understanding of the texts that they have read. Children can quiz either at home or at school. Even if you do not manage to read at home, reading books and diaries need to be brought into school, so we can read with pupils in school.
Please see the link below to access Accelerated Reader at home.
Maths
Children should be accessing Numbots or Times Table Rockstars for 10 minutes, five times a week.
This will support their understanding of number bonds and multiplication and division. Logins to these websites can be found in your child's Reading Record.
Spellings
In River Class, children follow either the RWI phonics programme or the RWI spelling programme. By the end of Year 2, children should be able to read and spell the common exception words in the PDF below.
