Rights Respecting Steering Group
At Old Cleeve, we are currently working towards our Silver Accreditation for being a Rights Respecting School. We achieved our Bronze status in July 2024.
We are proud to be part of the Rights Respecting School programme, as we want all children to know that they have these rights and that they have a voice.
'Old Cleeve's Rights Respecting Steering Group' meets fortnightly and is a group made up of adults and children. Our meetings are to discuss, plan and motivate everyone in being a Rights Respecting School.
Our representatives are made up of children from Years 1 -4, with up to 3 members from each year group. The children apply to be part of the Steering Group at the beginning of the academic year. The children are responsible for ensuring that we are moving the school forward as being Rights Respecting. This is through examples such as creating our Playtime and Lunchtime Charters, collecting pupil voices on key areas such as lunchtimes, subjects and how they feel about school. The children also present fortnightly assemblies called Article of the Week, where the children explain what they would like to the school to focus on for that particular week.
Article 12 in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that 'all children have the right to an opinion, and for adults to listen and take these views seriously.' During steering group meetings, all contributions are mutual, and the children's ideas are valued just as much as the adults.
Children are responsible for passing information from Steering Group meetings to their classmates.
Please see the UNICEF leaflet which explains the different articles from the CRC Rights of the Child.
