Year 2 (River)

Welcome to River Class. We are taught by Miss O'Keefe and supported by Mrs Taylor, Miss Stevens and Miss Trunks.

In River Class we enjoy learning about the world and community we live in. We take pride in our learning and are always curious to know more. We love to develop our teamwork skills and enjoy supporting each other in our learning. We like to take part in practical activities to develop our skills and knowledge.

                                                  Our School Day

Here is our weekly timetable:

RWI stands for Read Write Inc Phonics. This is taught in streamed groups across Key Stage 1 to provide children with targeted phonics support. Children are assessed regularly and, when ready, will exit the RWI programme and during this time have a writing lesson with Miss O'Keefe, focussing on further developing their phonics skills, as well as learning and applying a range of grammatical features to their writing. The rest of the lessons across the timetable are taught whole class.

Pupils must bring to school everyday:

  • Reading Record/Book
  • Book Bag
  • Water Bottle
  • Coat
  • Packed Lunch (unless having a School Dinner).

On Tuesdays and Fridays River Class has PE. Kits should please include the following:

  • Black Shorts/Jogging Bottoms
  • School PE sports top
  • School jumper or PE jumper
  • Trainers

                                       Supporting Learning at Home

If you would like to support your child with their learning at home, here are some activities that can be completed across the key areas of Reading and Maths:

  • Children should read at home every day for at least 10 minutes. The reading should be recorded in their reading record/diary and bought into school every day. Children who are still on the RWI phonics programme will receive a new book every 2 to 3 days; it is important to read these books more than once to help develop fluency and comprehension. Children who have exited the RWI phonics programme will be assessed and provided with a reading level. They can then select Accelerated Reader books within this level from the school library. These books can be quizzed on Accelerated Reader. Accelerated Reader allows children to explore their comprehension and understanding of the texts that they have read. Children can quiz either at home or at school. Even if you do not manage to read at home, reading books and diaries need to be bought into school, so we can read with pupils in school. Please see the link below to access Accelerated Reader at home.

  • Children should be accessing Numbots or Times Table Rockstars every day, for at least 10 minutes to support their understanding of Multiplication and Division. Logins to these websites can be found in the front of your child's Reading Record.

  • In River Class, children follow either the RWI phonics programme or the RWI spelling programme. By the end of Year 2, children should be able to read and spell the common exception words in the PDF below.

Homework Grid.

In addition to Reading and Maths activities, children can also select activities from the Homework Grid. These change each half term and involve activities across a range of curriculum areas. The activities link to the prior term's learning, providing an opportunity for children to consolidate their learning. It is recommended that children choose one activity from the homework grid to complete each week. Here is the Homework Grid for the first half of Summer Term:
