Our school places a great emphasis on creative and imaginative work in Literacy involving drama, story-telling and the use of authors and performers which will enrich children’s lives.
We are currently taking part in a writing project with Pie Corbett, educationalist and author and well-known for his books on teaching creative writing. The Talk for Writing project is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn to write. It enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally before reading and analysing it and then writing their own version.
'All texts are woven from the tissues of other texts, whether their authors know it or not.'
David Lodge-The Art of Fiction
Learning and remembering texts helps children say the text and know the general idea of the text before they start to write. When they sit down to write they can focus upon the best way to express what they want to say.
Learning and remembering a text is a multi-sensory method of teaching children stories so that they know them off by heart. This results in both structure and language patterns becoming embedded or internalised. The writer can then readily draw upon them to create new texts.
The multi-sensory approach includes hand actions to help support the memory for parts of the text and a visual text map to support retelling.
In Reception and Key Sage One children follow letter and sounds in phonics. To develop reading children have access to various schemes that include Oxford Reading Tree, Story World and Floppy Phonics. In Reception and Year 1 the children also have access to ‘Bug Club’ and from Year 1 onwards children use ‘Accelerated Reader’ to develop and improve key reading skills.
Drama is taught throughout the school, giving pupils an opportunity to explore issues, learn new skills, excessive their imagination and work as a team. All year groups take part in performances where the time and energy invested in rehearsals are rewarded by the thrill of performing for an appreciative audience of family and friends.
